Thionyl Chloride

It is a colorless to pale yellow or red liquid with a pungent odor. It is highly corrosive and toxic. Thionyl chloride is used as a chlorinating agent in the manufacture of organic compounds, as a solvent in Lithium batteries, and in making pesticides.

It is also poisonous, reacts with water, and is on the Chemical Weapons Convention's list of substances that could be used to make chemical weapons. Long-term inhalation of low concentrations or short-term inhalation of high concentrations of thionyl chloride has adverse health effects. Exposure far above the OEL could cause death. The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential.
